Question

Answer all of the following questions 1) a) In what way can natural gas production cause groundwater pollution? b) Mercury is emitted as a result of what energy source? 2) Give an example of one pesticide, what it was used for, and what impact it has/had on the environment. 3) Put the following in order of best to worst for the environment: Landfills, Recycling, Reduce Usage, Reuse Material, Waste Incineration. 4) Differentiate between how aerobic and anaerobic bacteria decompose organic matter. Include the products of the decomposition processes. 5) Lead was used in houses in Flint, Michigan for decades without any issues. Why did switching water sources in 2014 result in high lead concentrations in drinking water? Explanation / Answer

Answer 1 -

(a). Groundwater was contaminated from surface leaks and spills of fracturing fluid. Fracturing fluid also may migrate along abandoned wells, around improperly sealed and constructed wells, through induced fractures, or through failed wastewater pit liners.

(b). The burning of municipal and medical waste was once a major source of mercury emissions. A reduction in the use of mercury along with state and federal regulations, however, has led to a decrease in emissions from this source by over 95%.

Answer 2 - Insecticides are agents of chemical or biological origin that control insects. Control may result from killing the insect or otherwise preventing it from engaging in behaviors deemed destructive. Insecticides may be natural or manmade and are applied to target pests in a myriad of formulations and delivery systems (sprays, baits, slow-release diffusion, etc.).

Despite their importance, insecticides also have negative impact, like toxic residues in food, water, air and soil, resurgence and resistance of insect pests, and effect on non-target organisms. Some of insecticides do pose a potential risk to humans and other life forms and unwanted side effects to the environment.

Answer 3 -

Recycling > Waste Incineration > Reduce Usage > Reuse Material > Landfills

Answer 4 -

Anaerobic Decomposition (Fermentation) :- In an anaerobic system there is an absence of gaseous oxygen. In anaerobic decomposition organic compounds break down by the action of living organisms that do not require air in the normal sense. The end products of anaerobic decomposition is methane, carbon dioxide with trace levels of hydrogen sulfide.

Aerobic Decomposition :- When organic materials decompose in the presence of oxygen, the process is called “aerobic.” The aerobic process is most common in nature. In an aerobic system, such as composting, the microorganisms access free, gaseous oxygen directly from the surrounding atmosphere. The end products of an aerobic process are primarily carbon dioxide and water which are the stable, oxidised forms of carbon and hydrogen.

Answer 5 -

The root cause of the Flint lead crisis was corrosion, For 50 years, Flint had purchased its water from Detroit, its neighbor 70 miles to south. However, in 2014, the cash-strapped city decided to end its agreement with Detroit and start pulling water from the Flint River until a new aqueduct was built. What officials didn’t seem to anticipate was the effect that the slightly more acidic water of the Flint River would have on the city’s pipes.
