Molecular equation for HCl and AgNO3 Molecular equation for HCl and AgNO3 Advance Study Assignment- Chemistry 180 The Activity Series: Redox Reactions rite balanced chemical half-reactions for the oxidation of copper, aluminum, and nickel. 2+ 2. Al with neither aluminum ion nor nickel(II) ion. Nickel metal only reacts with copper(lI) ion uminum metal reacts with solutions of nickel(II) ion and copper(II) ion. Copper metal reacts order of decreasing ability as oxidizing agents. (This means the best oxidizing agent, the most readily reduced ion, should be at the top of the column.) Arrange the metal-metal ion half-reactions, written as reductions (M1" + ne M), in a column in 3. Using the data provided in question 2, explain your reasoning for the ordering shown in questicon

Explanation / Answer

(1) oxidation half-reactions for Cu, Al and Ni

     Cu   ----> Cu2+ + 2e-

     Al ----> Al3+ + 3e-

     Ni ----> Ni2+ + 2e-

(2) Oxidizing agent have tendency to get reduced. Higher the tendendy to get reduced stronger the oxidizing agent.

Reduction half-reactions are

Cu2+ + 2e-   ------> Cu

Ni2+ + 2e-   ------> Ni

Al3+ + 3e-   ------> Al

(3) As Al can react with both Ni2+ and Cu2+, it means Al has higher tendency to form Al3+.That is higher tendency to oxidise than the other two. So, Al is strongest reducing agent than the other two. In other words weakest oxidizing agent among the three metals.

Since Ni2+ can only react with Cu2+. It means is a stronger reducing agent than Cu2+. In other words weaker oxidizing agent than Cu

As we need to arrange in decreasing ability as oxidizing agent. The order will be Cu > Ni > Al.
