Question

8. 10 points. Which of the following molecules would you expect to be the most polar ? The least? Why? Br Br H Br CEC Br H 9. 10 points. Considering that sulfur is in the same chemical group (6A) as oxygen and should therefore have similar chemical properties, why can sulfur not be substituted for oxygen in organic molecules? 10. 10 points. molecules (a) Identify the chiral centers in each of the following two C-OH ??-?-? ??-?-? C-OH (b) Are these molecules enantiomers (isomers) or not ? Explain why or why not. Bonus question. 5 points. Suppose a molecule has two chirality centers. How many possible enantiomers would you expect to form ? Why? Would it be possible that such a molecule is not optically active?

Explanation / Answer

Answer 10. a.) Molecule 1 = C2 is chiral while C2 is chiral in molecule 2 also. (starting from carboxylic acid end).

b.) No, they are not enantiomers as they have different chemical formula.

Answer 9. Subsitution of sulfur will increase the reactivity of any of the functional groups ( thioesters>esters) possible and hence not used.

Answer 8. Most polar being C2H2BrF with Br-F being trans too each other as F have highest electronegativity.

Least polar is trans - C2Br2H2 as Br-Br will cancel each other's effort.
