How does the time you calculated compare to the meeting that you
the molecules af HCI move at un averagc xpeed of 45 . ow long shouid it take for the gss cxalecules in your esperiment to tasve the a. w long b xpenment to mavel the atstarse that v u :icas, ired tn your experiment? Shinw your ·aleulaties. Now docs the time you cnlculared camgare lo ibe meering tine that yoa mensared in your experiacur? sed on the compurison betwoen the calculuted and the measured travel times, uld you say that the HCl and NH, molecules move in straight lines! Explain. Cl and NH: molecules move in straight lines? Expain.Explanation / Answer
HCl --> V = 451 m/s
a)
how long for a gas in your exp. to travel the same distance:
MW of NH3 = 17 g/mol
MW of HCl = 36 g/mol
note that
velocity is related to
V = sqrt(3RT/MW)
so..
V1 = sqrt(3RT/MW1)
V2 = sqrt(3RT/MW2)
note that R,T and 3 are constants so:
V1/V2 = sqrt(MW2/MW1)
451/V2 = sqrt(17/36) = 0.68718
V2 = 451/0.68718 = 656.3054 m/s
b)
time calcualted compared to the your experiment (we require tour experimet)
Note htat we ASSUMED a straight line, this is NOT the case for a gas particle's
since particles collide and change directions with other particles/wall container, so definetively do not assume the straightline path
c)
NOT likely, since they collide too much, the striaght line is impossible (i.e. actually it is possible in a very remote case due to entropy)
but do not assume this are striaght lines
