Question

Answer the questions in order please.

Study the diagram shown below. This is a solid solution phase diagram that you are already familiar with. It shows a how a phase (Unk-A) is able to vary its composition with mixing another phase (Unk-B) and consequently change its physical behavior. Note that the vertical scale is the temperature, while the horizontal axis is the composition (solid solution substitution) shown as mole% UnkB. The horizontal axis is finite and varies from 0-100%, such that the left-end of the axis is 0% unk B (or 100% Unk A), while the right-end of the axis is 100% Unk-B (or 0% Unk-A). Let us consider the labeled points A, B, C, D, E within the phase diagram below to answer the following: a) List the labeled point(s) in the diagram that are on the Liquidus curve _____, and those on the solidus curve are: _____ b) The composition of point A (at temperature of _____ degree C) is _____. c) The phase(s) present at point B (which has the composition is _____) is _____. d) The two phase(s) present at point C are _____ (composition of _____) and _____ (composition of _____) Fill in the corresponding details from the right column with labeled points (A, B, C, D, E) in the left column (refer to figure on the left):

Explanation / Answer

a. Point A is on the Liquidus curves, Point E is on the solidus curve.

Liquidus Line is the line that separates the "all liquid*" phase from the "liquid and crystal" phase. Solidus Line is the line that separates the "liquid and crystal phase from the "all crystal" phase.

b. The composition of Point A at 800 oC is approximate 23% of Unk-B. (To determine the composition drop a vetrical line from the point which you want to determine and for temperature draw a horizontal line from that point)

c. The phase present at point B (which has the composition of 80% Unk-B) phase is All Liquid

d. The two phase present at point C are Liquid (40% of Unk-B) and solid (60% of Unk-A).

point C is at a phase where the phase is solid and liquid both. This is between the phase solid and liquid.

6.

Label points Details B Liquid/Melt E Last drop of melt E first formed crystal D All Soild A Crystal of 25% Unk-B
