Question
a student constructs a coffee cup 3. A student constructs a coffee cup calorimeter and places 50.0 mL of water into it. After a brief period of stabilization, the temperature of the water in the calorimeter is determined to be 20.00 °C. To this is added 50.0 mL of water that was originally a temperature of 54.5 °C. A careful plot of the temperatures recorded after this established the temperature at T, was 31.25 °C. What is the calorimeter constant in J/°C for this calorimeter? (Density H2O = 1.00 g/mL; specific heat of water = 4184 J/g·°C) Show all work. Experiment 12| Hess' Law and Heats of Neutralization 171Explanation / Answer
Heat gained by water at 20 deg.c + heat gained by Calorimeter= heat lost by water at 50 deg.c
heat gained by water at 20 deg.c= mass* specific heat* temperature difference= 50*4.184*(31.25-20)=2353.5 joules
heat gained by calorimeter= heat capacity of water* temperature difference= x*(31.25-20)=11.25x
heat lost by water at 50 deg.c = 50*4.184*(54.5-31.25)=4863.9 joules
hence 2353.5+11.25x= 4863.9
11.25x= 2510.4 and x= 223.1467 j/deg.c
