1. The Warm-up: of the following molecules whether room temperature Molutions Indicate (YES or NO will rotate plane polarued light: b arde the strengest base below t, cide the compound that wil underga a iubstitution react on at the fast when treated with NascH,in DMF mark d, Rank the compounds below according to the relative rate at which they would be expected to undergon cleephic addition (i" fastest to 4 slowest 12 marks)

Explanation / Answer

(a) 1,2 - dichlorocyclohexane (2nd) and trans - 1,3 -dimethylcyclopropane (3rd) can rotate plane polarised light. Because these two compounds have chiral centre.

(b) o - methoxy anisole (3rd) is strong base. Because it increases the electron density on negatively charged oxygen by +R effect.

(c) DMF is a polar solvent, so it the tertiary alkyl halide reacts faster in polr solvent through SN1 mechanism. So, 2,2-dimethyl-3-bromobutane(1st) reacts faster in DMF solution through SN1 mechnism by forming carbocation intermediate.

(d) CF3CH2CHO > CH3CH2CHO > CH3COCH3 > CH3COOCH3

Electron withdrawing goups(F) increase the nucleophilicity of C and electron donating groups (-R, -OR) can decrease nucleophilicity of C.
