Review Topics) Use the Keferences to access important values if needed for this question According to the following reaction, how many grams of carbon tetrachloride will be formed upon the complete reaction of 22.9 grams of chlorine gas with excess carbon disulfide? carbon disunde (s) + chlorine (g) carbon tetrachloride (I) + sulfur dichloride (s) grams carbon tetrachloride Submit Answer Retry Entire Group 7 more group attempts remaining The equation for this reaction is: CS2 (s)+ 4Ch (g)cC() sc, (s) Previous Hide Hint

Explanation / Answer

The balanced equation is

CS2 + 4 Cl2 --------> CCl4 + 2 SCl2

Number of moles of chlorine gas = 22.9 g / 70.906 g/mol = 0.323 mole

from the balanced equation we can say that

4 mole of Cl2 produces 1 mole of CCl4 so

0.323 mole of Cl2 will produce

= 0.323 mole of Cl2 *(1 mole of CCl4 / 4 mole of Cl2)

= 0.0808 mole of CCl4

mass of 1 mole of CCl4 = 153.82 g so

the mass of 0.0808 mole of CCl4 = 12.4 g

Therefore, the mass of carbon tetrachloride produced would be 12.4 g
