Question
6) The Harbor Process
6a.) The Haber process is an industrially important process that forms gaseous ammonia from the reaction between molecular nitrogen gas and molecular hydrogen gas. What is the balanced reaction for the Haber process?
6b.) Is this reaction spontaneous at room temperature? Explain your answer.
6c.) This reaction is extremely slow, and an easy way to speed up reactions is to increase temperature. Is this reaction more spontaneous at 300 degrees Celsius or at room temperature? Explain.
Explanation / Answer
6.a. N2 (g) + 3 H2 (g) = 2 NH3 (g) and heat is relased.
6.b. it is an exothermic reaction, it mean the heat has been produced in the product side. so, the temperature in right side is more than left side. Yes, the reaction is spontaneous at room temperature but the production rate is very low.
6.c. No, the reaction is not more spontaneous at 300 degree celcius because according to La Chatelier principle the exothermic reaction is more favor to product side at lower temperature.
