Question
Average annual solar radiation in the U.S. (courtesy of U.S. Dept of Energy). From Figure 13.12 you can see that China and the U.S. are by far the largest producers of carbon dioxide (CO_2) in the world. This is because these two nations consume the most energy and they rely on fossil fuels for at) out 90% of their energy needs. a) Explain whether or not you think it is possible for there to be an overall reduction in worldwide CO: emissions without the cooperation of both the U.S. and China. b) Notice that China's per capita emission of CO_2 is much lower than that of the U.S. With a population of over 1.4 billion people and a rapidly growing economy. China's future energy needs will be enormous. Explain how this will affect China's ability to scale up renewable sources of energy so as to reduce its CO_2 emissions. Carbon dioxide emission of the world's top energy consumers. Lab 13 - Energy ResourcesExplanation / Answer
a) Coal/Oil Burning is the most important cause of CO2 emissions. Both US and China account for more than 45 percent of global CO2 emissions. They have the largest potential to reduce these emissions growth and need to work cooperatively to decrease them. So in my opinion the decrese in CO2 emission is not possible without cooperation of these countries. Infact both countries critically need assistance from outside to limit these emissions. Without having assistance in reducing dangerous gas emissions, they could double or even quadruple emissions over the next 30 years. With good assistance from other industrialized countries the increase in emissions could be cut in half.
b) China is already a very highly populated place. If they constantly implement advanced energy technologies and strict policies to cut energy-demand growth then no matter how rapidly growing economy it is, It will be able to scale up and reduce the emission of CO2 .
Some ways which China should follow to curb these emissions are :-
1. Cutting pollution from automobiles
2. Building renewable sources and nuclear reactors.
3. Limit Coal use
4. Keep check on deforestation
