Introduction : Kennesaw state Unvi.
We have learned that the Earth is a dynamic planet which is constantly in motion. This includes not only
the physical body of the Earth itself but the surrounding fluids too. In order to make observations and
conclusions it is necessary to understand these motions, measure or quantify and calculate the changes
over time. You will work with Google Earth and the weekly reading to help guide you through several
calculations that will help solidify your understanding of Earths motions and how we calculate space and
time.
Tasks & Questions
Open Google Earth. Locate your home by typing your address or town in the search box. Look in the
driveway, parking lot, or street and see if you can find your vehicle or possibly someone in your family.
As with the previous lab, move the tilting, direction and zooming tools until you identify something
familiar. If you look on the imagery date you may use a calendar to figure out what day of the week the
image was taken and possibly figure out where you were located at that time (soccer game, fishing,
work, etc) and find yourself in the image.
Select Tools, then options. In the 3D tab select degrees, minutes and seconds. Click apply, then place
your cursor in front of your address and (question 1) record the Latitude and longitude with proper
units.
Change the option to decimal degrees. (question 2) Record the latitude and longitude with proper units.
How is it different than your measurement in question 1?
Select View then, Add grid. Zoom out. (question 3) What has changed on the map?
Zoom out to full Earth in view. Notice the important lines identified and labeled in yellow.
Question 4 List the Yellow lines with their name (all 7), identify (latitude or longitude line) value and
determine their significance, i.e. why are they important? What are they a reference for?
(example) The antimeridian, also known as the international dateline is located 180 degrees east or west
longitude. It is important reference line because this is where we move our calendar day ahead or
behind based on which direction we travel.
Question 5 Take a look and compare lines of latitude and longitude. Refer to your book if you cannot
point out the differences and measurements. Are latitude lines parallel? Or do they intersect one
another? What about lines of longitude? If the lines intersect describe the location where they intersect.
Under the layers panel expand the weather (white triangle), check the clouds selection. (question 6)
Record cloud conditions above North Georgia and the time/date you performed this task. If the states
layer is not labeled for you under layers check borders and labels.
Question 7 How many degrees does Earth rotate or spin on its axis each day?
Question 8 What is the period of rotation of Earth in hours?
Question 9 How many degrees does Earth rotate each hour. Divide degrees (answer 7) by hours (answer
8) . Include units and show work.
Question 10 Using your text book, how many time zones are in the continental United States.
Question 11 Using your answer from question 9, how many degrees wide is each time zone? Why?
Use your textbook figures 3.6 & 3.7, pgs 48-49
Question 12 Why do you think the time zones in the United Stated do not follow straight lines?
Question 13. Make 2 observations and 1 conclusion about the placement of time zones in other regions
of the Earth. Be specific in your examples.
Question 14 Describe how you would shift your watch or clock as you travel east, or west across a time
zone boundary.
Question 15 I am in New York and hop on a plane to Los Angeles at 4pm. The expected in flight travel
time gate to gate is approximately 6 hours. Accounting for Earths rotation rate, calculated above, and
time zone changes what time should I tell my grandma Dorothy to pick me up, especially since she
doesn’t have a smart phone and will need to circle the airport until she finds me.

first of all it should be that we have an updated google earth map in our device otherwise it may be possible that there will be any incorrect measures. so if we take the updated version of google earth map then we can give the following problems solution as follows-
