Question
The response below answers this question: Have you found an environmental issue that you would attend a rule making session and testify for or against? What is the health concern?
In 100 words, Do you think your classmate has a reason for a rule to be developed? This is based off your opinion on the response below. Do you believe a ruling should be made for no smoking in all restaurants and bars across the country?
I would definitely support a ruling for NO SMOKING in all restaurants and bars across the country, I really appreciate the consideration for non- smokers by businesses that also have a smoke free zone upon entry to the establishment. It is a nuisance to walk by smokers when you are trying to enter a building and cross the haze that seems to surround this gaggle of smokers creates. Especially when we are going to a doctor’s appointment or hospital visit. These tend to be times of great concern for acute or chronic illness care, and it seems to be contradictory to have smokers gathered near an institution for health. Yet, I have often made this very walk with sick children or myself past the smoking section.
The Center for Disease Control (CDC) records over 3 billion in medical health fees to mitigate the morbidity and mortality from smoking alone.1 Caitlin Huston published an article recently on the MarketWatch showing that 16 of the 50 United States still allow smoking in restaurants and or bars.2 Going out to celebrate with family and friends should not infringe upon the health of the party, but breathing in second hand smoke does just that.3 The CDC also has recorded over two and half million deaths because of second hand smoke and the list of health issues is just as remarkable.3 For adults the chronic health issues are related to cardiovascular and pulmonary compromise to the vasculature impacting one’s overall health. Children can enter the world with lower than average birth weight due to the mother’s history of smoking during pregnancy, they suffer from more frequent ear infections and may also have more per respiratory infections.1,3 Second hand smoke is also implicated as a risk factor for sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS).
These health complications also translate to significant financial burden for smokers and non-smokers alike. At this time, states have the ruling authority to make decisions for their constituents respective of this issue. Individual freedoms to smoke or not to smoke make this health concern personal and very temperate. Collective health and community must be the core of this volatile personal choice. I would testify and support the expansion of no smoking in restaurants and bars across the U.S. without hesitation. Clean air and the ability to breath it without restriction are benefits of smoke free environments.
