I believe that we have to take care of ourselves before we can take care of others. We can start by being a good role model to our patients and our staff. Always using good hand hygiene and observing standard precautions and isolation precautions would be a good place to start. As a CNL, I would anticipate having more flexibility with my time than the bedside nurse and I can use that extra time to educate my patients and staff. Knowledge is power and if we ensure our patients have a good understanding of health promotion and disease prevention we are giving them a good place to start. It would be important to be able to disperse this education in many forms taking into consideration the different languages and the types of learners and individual learning needs. Performing follow up education and requesting teach back is another way to promote understanding.
