From what I gathered from research, there seems to be no wrong exercise for people with MS. Each person experiences different severity of symptoms. So as a professional, it is probably best to have a variety of exercise on hand and let the client decide what works and doesn’t work for their individual MS needs. Something that was interesting to take into consideration is that most people with MS are sensitive to heat. Some options that I though of are swimming, water aerobics, resistance training, and certain forms of yoga. Also, taking advantage of winter outdoor exercises, depending on where you live. Regardless, any MS exercise program should start at a low level and gradually increases, this is to ensure safety and minimizing relapses.

Explanation / Answer

Regular exercise plays a key role in achieving the optimal level patient activity and avoiding exacerbation of symptoms or relapse. Exercise causes notable improvements in the cardiovascular, respiratory and muscle strength activity in MS patients. Flexibility exercises (such as yoga) can reduce spasticity and avoid painful muscle contractions. Balancing exercises reduce the fall rates, resistance exercises prevent/reduce fatigue.

However, previous research indicates that exercise in MS patients must be supervised and individualized to achieve the treatment goals and the quality of life.
