You are the collegiate Strength & Conditioning Specialist who is administering pre-testing for an athletic team. Please choose a sport, describe the energy system demands, select appropriate sport tests, and describe your selections for that sport.
I would chose Football. Football is a fast paced short time period sport. The athlete is on and off the field for 4 periods of 15 min each period depending on position played. It takes endurance and quick movements to play this sport. Depending upon position depends upon exercises you are specific in. For example the running back would train differently than the quarterback. Although all players on the field are in top physical conditioning.
Collegiate athletes who are trying out for the team have to perform a series of basic test to ensure they are suitable to play. The top four drills performed are the Sprint shuttle test, the 40 yard dash, vertical jump and standing broad jump. The Shuttle sprint starts at a the point stance and the athlete sprints to certain points on the field as fast as they can and then back to the starting line. The 40 yard dash is a three point stance as well then on go the athlete sprints as fast as he can to the finish line. Then the vertical jump is tested, this is where the athlete stands with knees bent and back straight almost in a squat position and on go the athlete jumps as high as he can straight up in the air touching a measuring tape or chalk stick. The final test would be the standing broad jump or long jump. This is where the athlete starts at an almost squatting position with arms back and toes jump behind starting line then leaps as far forward as he can landing on his two feet.
All these drills are performed to show the strength of the athletes agility, speed, power, and endurance all of these are need for the fast pace of football.
Depending on the position played will depend on the energy level exerted. Both Anaerobic and Aerobic power is needed for a successful player.
Explanation / Answer
1. There are many components of fitness in the aerobic fitness is one of the most important attributes followed by anaerobic fitness and agibility.
2. Apart from spring shuttle test, the 40 yard dash, vertical jump, standing broad jump, other tests are also required such as body fat, flexibility, agibility and repeat springs.
3. Excess bodyfat would effect the food ball players ability to move freely, and the extra weight will increase fatigue.
4. Good hamstring flexibility is important for football players in the ball kicking skill.
5. Strength will also determine level and to monitor strength changes in conjunction with training program.
6. Maximum running speed and accelaration are very important in football this can be achieved by the 40 yard dash.
7. Agibility test is done by 505 agibility test it is useful to test that measures the ability to change direction 180 degrees. The ability to quickly change direction is important for football.
8. Aerobic fitness is very important which is needed to be able to maintain a high intensity through out 90 minute game.
9. Repeat sprint test are useful to measure not only anaerobic power, but also the ability to recover from short burst of hight intensity exercise.
10. The above tests are useful for selection of a football player.
