Question
- Calculate the specific gravity of liquid from the following data:
Mass of a metal cylinder in air = 56.8 gm
Apparent mass of the metal cylinder in water = 50.3 gm
Apparent mass of the metal cylinder in liquid = 48.7 gm - Determine the specific gravity of the wooden cylinder from the following data: (The metal cylinder of question 1 was used as the sinker.)
Mass of wooden cylinder in air = 6.9 gm
Apparent mass of the metal cylinder and wooden cylinder in water = 45.8 gm
Explanation / Answer
1) density of water = 1 g/ml
change in mass of cylinder = 56.8-50.3 = 6.5 gm indicating volume of cylinder = 6.5/1 = 6.5ml
in case of liquid change in mass = 56.8-48.7 = 8.1gm => specific gravity of 8.1/6.5 ml = 1.246
2) mass of woden cylinder in water = 45.8 - 50.3 = -4.5 gm
let x be the mass lost in water
then 6.9-x = -4.5
x = 6.9+4.5 = 11.4 gm which is equivalent to volume of 11.4 ml of water
so wooden block has a volume of 11.4ml
specific gravity of wooden block = 6.9/11.4 = 0.605
plz rate the answer, thanks:)
