Question
A 24-year old female comes into the clinic complaining of pain in her ‘belly’ and a burning sensation when she urinates, particularly first thing in the morning. She also has a mucopurulent watery discharge that is expelled, usually after her first morning urination. She says that she is in a monogamous sexual relationship, but she is less sure that her boyfriend is. The doctor prescribes tetracycline and recommends that the woman send her boyfriend in to the clinic, as well. The doctor mentions that the woman was lucky, because 80% of women that have the same infection are asymptomatic, and an untreated infection can lead to pelvic inflammatory disease and could potentially lead to sterility.
