Question

PLEASE SHOW ALL WORK NEEDED TO SOLVE, THANK YOU!

A 1200kg station wagon is moving along a straight highway at 12 m/sec. Another car with mass 1800 kg and speed 20 m/sec has its center of mass 40 m ahead if the center of mass of the station wagon. A) Find the center of mass consistion of the system of the two automobiles. B) Find the magnitude of the total momentum of the system given the data. C) FInd the speed of the center of mass of the system. D) Find the total momentum of the system, using the speed of the center of mass.

Explanation / Answer

let, m1 = 1200 kg, v1 = 12 m/s, x1 = 0 , y1 = 0

m2 = 1800 kg, v2 = 20 m/s, x2 = 40m ,y2 = 0.

A) Xcm = (m1+x1+m2*x2)/(m1+m2)

= (1200*0+1800*40)/(1200+1800)

= 24m from station wagon.

B) P_total = P1+P2

= m1*v1+m2*v2

= 1200*12+1800*20

= 50400 kg.m/s

C) Vcm = (m1*v1+m2*v2)/(m1+m2)

= (1200*12+1800*20)/(1200+1800)

= 16.8 m/s

D) P_total = (m1+m2)*Vcm

= (1200+1800)*16.8

= 50400 kg.m/s
