Question

PLEASE SHOW ALL WORK NECESSARY TO COMPLETE EACH PROBLEM. THANKS IN ADVANCE

1. An atm network uses a token bucket scheme for traffic shaping. A new token is put into the bucket every 10µ second. Each token is good for one cell ( i. e. a packet) , which contains 50 bytes of data. What is the maximum sustainable data rate?

2. A computer on a network is regulated by a token bucket. The token bucket is filled at a rate of 1Mbps. It is initially filled to capacity with 10megabits. how long can the computer transmit at the maximum speed of 6 Mbps?

3. Imagine a flow specification that has a max packet size of 2000 bytes, a token bucket rate of 20 million bytes/sec, a token bucket size of 1 million bytes, and a max transmission rate of 50 milliom bytes/sec. How long can a burst at max speed last?

Explanation / Answer

Hi below i have given the solution for first two questions , sorry i couldn;t exactly get the solution for third one,

1. An atm network uses a token bucket scheme for traffic shaping. A new token is put into the bucket every 10µ second. Each token is good for one cell ( i. e. a packet) , which contains 50 bytes of data. What is the maximum sustainable data rate?

ATM payload = 50 bytes = 50*8 = 400 bits

An ATM cell may be sent every time a new token is placed into the Token Bucket, which occurs every 10 microseconds.

So the maximum sustainable data rate = 400 bits/ 10x10-6

2. A computer on a network is regulated by a token bucket. The token bucket is filled at a rate of 1Mbps. It is initially filled to capacity with 10megabits. how long can the computer transmit at the maximum speed of 6 Mbps?

The net outflow from the token bucket is 5Mbps. As a result, the time it takes for the full bucket to empty is 10Mb/5Mbps=2sec. Thus, during the first 2 seconds the computer transmits at the maximum 6-Mbps rate and then it switches to 1-Mbps.
