Question
The figure shows a red line and a green line of the same orderin the pattern produced by a diffraction grating. If we increasedthe number of rulings in the grating, say, by removing tape thathad covered half of the rulings, would the widths of the linesincrease, decrease, or remain the same?
increase
same
decrease
If we increased the number of rulings in the grating, say, by removing tape that had covered half of the rulings, wouldthe separation of the lines increase, decrease, or remain thesame?
increase
decrease
same
Would the lines shift to the right, to the left,or remain in the same place?
right
left
same
Can anyone answer this and explain why that happensplease? Thanks in advance and I rate every answer!
Explanation / Answer
(a)The width of the lines is inversely proportional to the number of lines or rulings in the grating. Hence if the number of lines increases to half, then the width of the lines will decrease.
(b) The number of lines in the grating did not depend on the separation of the lines. When the number of rulings on the grating increases, then the separation of lines will be same.
(c)The position of the line in the grating depends on the total number of lines per centimeter on the grating. But it did not depend on the total number of lines on the grating. Due to this reason, the line shift did not change. Hence, they remain in the same place.
