Question
The figure shows a motion diagram of two wind-up toys moving from left to right. The toys begin moving at the same time and the time intervals are also the same. First, describe in words the relative motions and positions of the two toys. Second which graph would correctly show position vs. time for both toys? Which line corresponds to which toy (circle or square)? Third which graph would correctly show velocity vs, time for both toys? How do you know? Which line corresponds to which toy (circle or square)?Explanation / Answer
1. When seen from any toy, the other toy would seem to be approaching it with a constant speed.
2.Graph D shows the position vs time for both toys. We can see that the toy represented by the cirlcle starts from the origin and the other toy start from some point in the right. Also the distance between their initial positions is more than the distance between their final positions. Only graph D meets both the criteria. The lower line represent the toy represented by circle and the upper line represent the toy represented by the square.
3.Graph H shows the velocity vs time for both toys. We can see that both toys are moving towards right, so their velocities have same sign. Also both toys are covering equal amount of distance in each interval of time, so their velocities are constant. Only graph H meets both the criteria. Upper line represent circle and lower line represent square.
