Question
Using the South University Online Library or the Internet, research about a disease of global concern (HIV). Based on your research, answer the following questions:
How would you use demographic data to characterize this disease?
How would you incorporate further research to address this disease?
How would you use morbidity and mortality in developing prevention strategies aimed at increasing attention to disease and decreasing adverse health outcomes?
Which phenomenon—morbidity or mortality—is better to study to develop preventive strategies? Why?
Explanation / Answer
We can use demographic data to characterize this disease as highly infectious in areas where different preventive measures for HIV are not used; such as the use of condoms. Through the infection data rate, we can characterize the disease as a highly preventable disease by individuals who have knowledge of preventive measures unlike them with no knowledge. The HIV pandemic is most prevalent in Sub-Saharan Africa. Over 60% of all people living with HIV/AIDS reside within the region.
I would incorporate further research to address this disease by doing a research on the possible causes i.e. the risk factors for this disease and the measures that can be taken to prevent it as in the case of this disease only by the method of prevention we can control it as there is no cure for this disease.
I will use morbidity data the data reflecting the rate of disease in a population and mortality rate i.e. the rate of death due to the HIV in generating awareness about the seriousness of this issue so that people adopt prevention strategies against this disease and decreasing adverse health outcomes as prevention is the only method to protect a population from this disease as there is no cure for this disease.
Out of the two phenomena morbidity or mortality; I think morbidity is better to study to develop preventive strategies as a population who is suffering from this disease eventually dies from this disease. Thus if we control the prevalence rate of this disease we can control the death rate as well.
