Question
At
t = 0,
the instantaneous position of two pulses moving along a taut string with a speed
v = 2.41 cm/s
are as shown in the diagram below. Each unit on the horizontal axis is 2.0 cm and each unit on the vertical axis is 6.0 cm.
(a) At what location will the resultant of the two pulses have minimum amplitude?
(b) At what time will the resultant of the two pulses have minimum amplitude?
(c) What is the value of this minimum amplitude?
Explanation / Answer
a) at 14 cm from horizontal the resultant of two pulses is minimum
b)
v=2.41 cm/s
t=0 x=2 cm
t=t x=14 cm
net distance=14-2=12 cm
t=d/v=12/2.41 sec
c) minimum amplitude=6 cm
that is the difference between their maximum amplitude
because at that point waves completely overlap
