Question
A small mass M attached to a string slides in a circle (x) on a frictionless horizontal table, with the force F providing the necessary tension (see figure). The force is then increased slowly and then maintained constant when M travels around in circle (y). The radius of circle (x) is twice the radius of circle (y).
Answer can be true, false, less than, greater than, equal to
(if you could leave an explanation that would be great!)
M's angular velocity at y is twice that at x.
M's kinetic energy at x is half that at y.
M's angular momentum at y is .... that at x.
As M moves from x to y, the work done by F is .... 0.
While going from x to y, there is a torque on M
Explanation / Answer
1) it is true,, becuase F = M x w1^2 and 2 F = M (x/2) w2^2 from which we see that w2 = 2w1
2) L1 = M x w1^2 and L2 = M (x/2) w2^ = 2 L1 , so it TWICE
3) true, since to torque is acting on it.
4) true
5) K1 = 1/2 M x^2 w1^2 and K2 = 1/2 M (x/2)^2 w2^2 so that we see that K2 = K1 , so it false.
