f = 17 cm

let u and v are object and image distances.

u + v = 1.02 m

u + v = 102 cm

v = 102 - u

Apply,


1/u + 1/v = 1/f

1/u + 1/(102-u) = 1/17


17*((102-u) + u) = (102-u)*u

1734 = 102*u - u^2

u^2 - 102*u + 1734 = 0

on solving the above equation we get

u = 21.6 cm

u = 80.4 cm

B) M = -v/u = -(102-21.6)/21.6 = -3.7


C) M = -v/u = -(102 - 80.4)/80.4 = 0.27
