6. Answer the following questions about the blind spot that can be found in each human eye (you may draw a figure if it helps you explain the blind spot but be sure you label this figure clearly) a) Specify the names of the two layers of the retina? b) Describe where the photoreceptors are located (be specific) AND if they are more superficial or deep to the majority of the nervous tissue of the eye c) Where is the blind spot located in the eye? (name AND describe the physical structure) y there is a blind spot in the human eye. Relate this to the structure and function of the retina. e) Assuming both eyes are open and fully functional, explain why you cannot detect your blind spot.

Explanation / Answer

a) the two layer of retina is as follows- i) pigment epithelium, which is situated outside and ii)sensory retiny which is composed of nerve tissue.

b) Photoreceptors are situated in the deepest region of the retina. Two types of photoreceptors , rod and cone cells are present in eye. They are present in deeper regions in comparison to other nerve tissues.

c) In our eye, there is a small portion , like a head of pin, where no optic nerve is present and also photoreceptors are absent. As a result no image is formed in those area and known as blind spot.

d) retina in our eyes is used to deliver information to brain with the help of optic nerve. But, optic nerve required a place to leave the eye and at this particular area we do not form any image and formed blind spot.

e) As we use two eyes at the same time, the absence of photoreceptor on one blind spot get compensated by other eye and vice versa. As a result we can not feel the presence of blind spots.
