Question

Two square metal sheets have a side length of 35.0 cm and are held apart with an air gap of 16.0mm to form a capacitor. Find the capacitance for this geometry. What is the charge when its potential difference is 14.0 V is applied to the plates? How much energy is stored in the capacitor? Two square metal sheets have a side length of 35.0 cm and are held apart with an air gap of 16.0mm to form a capacitor. Find the capacitance for this geometry. What is the charge when its potential difference is 14.0 V is applied to the plates? How much energy is stored in the capacitor?

Explanation / Answer

Note that for parallel plate capacitor, the capacitance is

C = Eo A/d

Wwhere

Eo = 8.85E-12 F/m
A = the area of each sheet (s^2 = (0.35 m)^2 = 0.1225 m^2)
d = separation of plates (16.0 mm = 0.016 m)

Thus,

C = 6.78E-11 F

Note that

Q = CV

where Q = the charge
V = the voltage (14.0 V)

Thus,

Q = (6.78E-11 F)(14.0 V)

Q = 9.49E-10 C

Note that the energy stored in a capacitor is

E = CV^2 /2

Thus,

E = (6.78E-11 F)(14.0 V)^2 /2

E = 6.64E-9 J
