Question

Due to the wave nature of light, light shined on a single slit will produce a diffraction pattern. Green light (535 nm) is shined on a slit with width 0.445 mm.

Due to the wave nature of light, light shined on a single slit will produce a diffraction pattern. Green light (535 nm) is shined on a slit with width 0.445 mm. (a) Find the width of the central maximum located 1.70 m from the slit. What is the relationship for destructive interference for a single slit? What is the definition of the fringe order? mm What is the relationship for destructive interference for a single slit? mm (b) What is the width of the first order fringe?

Explanation / Answer

From youngs double slt experiment, vertical distance from center to first maxima is

y = L tan ( theta)

for small angles tan (theta) ~ sin (theta)

y = ( lamda) L / d

= (535*10^-9 m ) ( 1,70 m ) / (0.445*10^ -3 m)

= 0.002 m

width of the central maxima is 2y = 0.004 m

b)

for second order

y = 2 (535 *10^-9 m) (1.70 m) / (0.445*10^-3 m) = 0.00408 m

width 0f the first orderis

y1 = 0.002 m

= 2 mm
