Question
Determine the direction of the force (if any) that will act on the charge in each of the following situations.
1) A negative charge within an electric field that points downward.
2) A positive charge within an electric field that points to the right.
3) A negative charge moving into the screen with a magnetic field that points left.
4) A positive charge moving out of the screen in a magnetic field that points upward.
5) A negative charge moving to the right in an electric field that points into the screen.
6) A negative charge moving to the right in a magnetic field that points to the left.
Explanation / Answer
1. Force on the negative charge will be upwards ( opposite of electric field).
2. Force on the positive charge will be along electric field i.e towards right.
3. Force on the negative charge going into the screen in a magnetic field towards left would be downwards.
4. Force on the positive charge coming out of the screen in a magnetic field upwards would be towards left.
5. Out of the screen i.e opposite of electric field.
6. No force would be experienced by negative charge due to magnetic field as angle between electron velocity and magnetic field is 180..
