Question
Two buildings are separated by a distance of 30 m. One building is 32 m high whereas the other building is 25 m high. Mr. Daredevil drives a motorbike off the roof of the higher building in such a way that he just manages to land on the roof of the other building. neglecting air resistance and assuming the roof of each building is perfectly flat, calculate the following:
a) Mr. Daredevil's hang time (total time duration Mr. Daredevil is between the two buildings)
b) the speed of the motorbike right before Mr. Daredevil takes off the higher building in miles per hour
c) the angle of impact (the angle with the horizontal made by the motorbike's velocity vector when it lands on the roof of the lower building)
Explanation / Answer
a) Use equation
y=Viy*t+1/2*a*t^2
(25-32)=0*t+1/2*-9.8*t^2 => t= 1.2s
b)Use equation,
X= Vix*t
30=Vix*1.2 => Vix = 25m/s
c)
Vfx=Vix =25m/s …………(Since no acceleration along X axis)
Vfy=Viy+a*t = 0-9.8*1.2 = -11.76m/s
q= tan^-1(Vfy/Vfx)=tan^-1(-11.76/25) = -25.19 deg
