Question

Three identical very dense masses of 5100 kg each are placed on the x axis. One mass is at x1 = -130 cm , one is at the origin, and one is at x2 = 400 cm .

a) What is the magnitude of the net gravitational force Fgrav on the mass at the origin due to the other two masses? Take the gravitational constant to be G = 6.67×1011 Nm2/kg2 . Express your answer in Newtons.

b) What is the direction of the net gravitational force on the mass at the origin due to the other two masses?

Choices: +x direction or -x direction.

Explanation / Answer

Let, m1 = m2 = m3 = m = 5100 kg

r13 = 130 cm = 1.3 m

r23 = 400 cm = 4 m

Net force acting on m3,

Fnet = G*m^2/r13^2 - G*m^2/r23^2

= 6.67*10^-11*5100^2/1.3^2 - 6.67*10^-11*5100^2/4^2

= 9.18*10^-4 n

direction : -x
