His goal is to reach a window, two stories or 5.13 m down, on the building across the alley. Ignore air resistance. If the alley is 10.5 m wide, how fast must he run when jumping off the roof? The walkway leading to Everglades Hall is splattered with raw eggs. The mess is about a distance of 55 m away from the building. You suspect fellow dorm residents to be responsible for this. Assuming a horizontal throw and a throwing speed of 62 mph you try to identify the floor from which the eggs have be en thrown. From what height have the eggs been thrown?

Explanation / Answer

Initial horizontal velocity is,

vi = 62 mph

     =27.71 m/s

The horizontal distance is,

x = 55 m

The time taken to reach ground, is,

t = ( 2h / g )

Rewrite the equation for h.

h = (1/2) g t^2

But, t = x / vi

         = 55 / 27.71

         = 1.98 s

Hence,

            h = (1/2) * 9.8 * (1.98)^2

             = 19.3 m
