Question

The following problem was made up by your professor. Somehow he was not careful enough to figure out that the problem is ill posed – there is not logically consistent answer as it is written. Now your assignment is to modify the problem so that the solution does not lead to logical inconsistency. There are at least two possible modifications you can do. Write your proposal and its answer to help professor.
Problem: A racing bicycle moves at a speed 10 m/s around a banked circular track of radius 0.20 km track with the angle of 30o with the horizontal. The cyclist’s mass is 55 kg. What is the normal force the cyclist feels?
a. 55 N b. 91 N c. 28 N d. 640 N

My attempt:

Nsin(30)=M(v)^2/r --> 55N

Explanation / Answer

given,

speed = 10 m/s

radius = 0.2 km

angle = 30 degree

mass = 55 kg

normal force * sin(30) = mv^2 * sin(30) / r

normal force * sin(30) = 55 * 10^2 * sin(30) / 200

normal force = 55 N
