Question
In vacuum, the wavelength of the light in your laser pointer is 538 nm.Standing at the shore of a calm pond, you shine the laser beam onto the water surface at an angle of 35 from the normal to the surface. The index of refraction for the water is n = 1.333.
a.) What is the wavelength of the light as it enters the water?
b.) What is the frequency of the light as it enters the water?
c.) What is the speed of the light as it enters the water?
d.) What is the direction of propagation of the light as it enters the water?
Explanation / Answer
a) wavelength = 538/1.333 = 403.60 nm
b) frequency will be same = C/(wave length) = 3*10^8/(538*10^-9) = 5.57e+14 sec^-1
c) speed = C/1.333 = 3*10^8/1.333 = 2.25*10^8 m/s
d) using snell's law
n1sin(i) = n2sin(r)
1*sin(35) = 1.333*sin(r)
0.57 = 1.333sin(r)
=> r = 25.27 degree
