Question
A pendulum is set in motion. Consider what will happen to the frequency or period in each of the following situations.
(Increase, Stay the same, Decrease)
If the mass of the pendulum is doubled, the frequency will _______.
If the length of the pendulum is doubled, the frequency will _______.
If the amplitude of the motion is doubled, the frequency will ______.
If the length of the pendulum is doubled, the period will _______.
If the acceleration due to gravity is decreased (suppose you travel to the surface of the moon), the frequency will _______.
Explanation / Answer
1)
if the mass of the pendulum is doubled , the frequency will stay the same ...because mass have no effect on the frequency of the pendulum.
2)
for the frequency
f = 1 / 2* pie* ( sqrt( g / L))
so when the length is doubled the frequency will decrease ..
3)
for the period we use
T = 2 * pie * (sqrt (L / g))
if the length of pendulum is doubled then the period is increase..
4)
f = 1 / 2 * pie * ( sqrt ( g * L )
so when the gravity is decrease the frequency is also decrease.
