Question
A conducting spherical shell (below) is concentric with a solid conducting sphere. Initially, each conductor carries zero net charge.
A charge of +2Q is placed on the outer sphere.
After equilibrium is achieved, the charges on the surface of the solid sphere, q1, the inner surface of the spherical shell, q2, and the outer surface of the spherical shell, q3, are which of the following?
A) q1 =-2Q,q2 =+2Q,q3 =0
B) q1 =0,q2 =0,q3 =+2Q
C) q1 =0,q2 =+2Q0,q3 =0
D) q1 =+2Q,q2 =-2Q,q3 =+2Q E) q1 =0,q2 =-2Q,q3 =+2Q
Explanation / Answer
Solution:
The answer is B) q1 = 0, q2 =0, q3 = +2Q
Since q1 is a solid sphere, there will be no net charge in the inside. So there will not be charges on the surface of q1. Therefore, charges on the surface of q1 is zero. Since there is no charges on q1 surface there will not be charge on inner surface of q2 because of q1+q2 = 0. Therefore +2Q charges on surface of spherical shell q3 remain in surface.
