Question

Two long, parallel conductors, separated by 11.0 cm, carry currents in the same direction. The first wire carries a current I1 = 3.00 A, and the second carries I2 = 8.00 A. (See figure below. Assume the conductors lie in the plane of the page.)

(a) What is the magnetic field created by I1 at the location of I2?

(b) What is the force per unit length exerted by I1 on I2?

(c) What is the magnetic field created by I2 at the location of I1?

(d) What is the force per length exerted by I2 on I1?

Explanation / Answer

here ,

a)

magnetic field due to a wire is given as

B = u0*I/(2pi)

for the magnetic field created by i1

B1 = u0*3/(2pi*0.11)

B1 = 5.46 *10^-6 T

the magnetic field created by i1 is 5.46 *10^-6 T in +ve z -direction

B)

force extered by i1 on i2 per unit length

F12 = B*i2

F12 = 5.46 *10^-6 * 8

F12 = 4.4 *10^-5 N/m

the force extered by i1 on i2 per unit length is 4.4 *10^-5 N/m

C)

for the wire i2 ,

B2 = u0*8/(2*pi*0.11)

B2 = 1.45 *10^-5 T

the magnetic field due to wire i2 is 1.45 *10^-5 T in -ve z - direction

D)

according to Newton's third law

F21 = F12

force extered on i1 by i2 = 4.4 *10^-5 N/m
