Question
Three capacitors are shown in the figure. C1=8, C2=4,C3=2. The capacitor network is connected to an applied potential difference V. After the charges on the capacitors have reached their final values, the charge on capacity C2 is 480. What is the potential difference of battery?PLEASE SHOW WORK! See picture for units. Explanation / Answer
Here C1 and C2 are connected in series. so charge C1 should be equal to charge on C2.
so, Q1 = Q2
= 480 micro C
potentail across C1, V1 = Q1/C1
= 480/8
= 60 volts
potentail across C2, V2 = Q2/C2
= 480/4
= 120 volts
Here the combination C1and C2 is connected parallel to battery.
so, Potentail across C1and C2 is equal to potential across battery.
so,
V_battery = V1 + V2
= 60 + 120
= 180 volts
