Question

CAN SOMEONE PLEASE HELP ANSWER THIS! I GOT A BUT CANT GET PART B AND THIS IS DUE IN AN HOUR PLEASE! HELP WILL BE GREATLY APPRECIATED. PART A WAS .900 J.

n an empty rubber raft the pressure is approximately constant. You push on a large air pump that pushes 1.0 L(1.0× 103m3) of air into the raft. You exert a 18 N force while pushing the pump handle 5.0×102 m .

Part A

Determine the work done on the gas.

Express your answer to two significant figures and include the appropriate units.

0.900 J

Part B

If all of the work is converted to thermal energy of the 1.0 L of gas, what is the temperature increase of the gas? Assume that the air obeys the ideal gas law and is initially at 293 K.

WEnvonGas =

0.900 J

Explanation / Answer

A) Workdone = -Force*displacement

= -18*5*10^-2

= -0.9 J (here negative sign indicates work is done on the system)

B) Let n is the number of moles of the gas,

Apply, P*V = n*R*T

n = P*V/(R*T)

= 1.013*10^5*1*10^-3/(8.314*293)

= 0.0416 moles

Workdone = chnage in therma energy of the gas

W = (3/2)*n*R*(T2 -T1)

T2 - T1 = 2*w/(3*n*R)

T2 = T1 + 2*w/(3*n*R)

= 293 + 2*0.9/(3*0.0416*8.314)

= 294.73 K

so, icrease in temperature = T2 - T1

= 294.73 - 293

= 1.73 k
