Given the figure below.
The motor exerts a constant force on the cable pulling the crate to the right on a smooth floor. As a result,the crate is moving at constant acceleration a.
(a) if the motor force doubles and the mass of the crate decreases by half, what is the crate's acceleration in this situation of a?
(b) if the motor force increases by a factor of 10, and the mass of crate decreases by a quarter, what I'd the crate's acceleration in this situation in term of a?
Explanation / Answer
We know ,
Force = Mass * Acceleration
Intially, F = ma
aintial = F/m ----------------1
a) Now Force doubles and mass decreases by half.
New Force = 2F
New Mass = m/2
2F = m/2 * (anew)
(anew) = 4 (F/m)
From equation 1 and 2 -
(anew) = 4 aintial
The above relation shows acceleration increases 4 times and is 4a.
b)Now Force increases by a factor of 10 and mass decreases by quarter.
New Force = 10F
New Mass = m/4
10F = m/4 * (anew)
(anew) = 40 (F/m)
From equation 1 and 2 -
(anew) = 40 aintial
The above relation shows acceleration increases 40 times and is 40a.
