Question
A convex mirror of radius R = 24 cm is located a distance 36 cm from a converging lens of focal length 10 cm. An object 3 cm high is placed at a distance 15 cm from the vertex of the lens as shown in the diagram. a) Where is the optical image of the object due to the converging lens? Carefully draw two rays which locate this image. b) Using the iniuge in ) as the object for the mirror, find the position of the image due to the mirror. Carefully draw two rays which locate this image. c) What is the magnification of the system? d) Is the final image real or virtual and how can you tell?Explanation / Answer
a) 1/v = 1/10 - 1/15
=> v = 30 cm
=> Image due to converging lens = 30 cm to the right of lens .
b) Here, 1/v = - 1/12 - 1/6
=> v = -4 cm
=> Position of image due to mirror = 4 cm to the right of mirror .
c) magnification of system = -(30/15) * (4/6)
= - 1.33
d) Final image is virtual .
