Question
Discuss whether or not the expensive efforts to save several species of animals from extinction are justified. Why or why not? Also discuss the impact that the extinction of a species will have on an environment. This is a very controversial topic, as most species-level extinctions are directly related to some impact from humans. However, there are scientists who believe that humans are “change factors” meaning our presence, in some cases, is required for an extinction event, which allows other species to fill in the voids created by the extinction event. I think all the single or multiple efforts irrespective of its cost, made to save animal species which are on the verge of extinction are worthy and can be justified. It is the fact that we the humans cannot live without animals but animals surely can live without us. Evidence of this can be traced millions of years back when there was quite a harmony between animals and plants when humans were not there. Humans were last to evolve after animals and dramatically they changed the nature according to their needs without keeping in mind that animals also share this planet and these have the equal rights to stay here. Humans not only have modified existing species of animals according to there needs but human efforts have made many animal species to go extinct due to many activities like habitat destruction, extensive deforestation, overutilization of land and soil and other resources, spread of obnoxious gases leading to different types of pollution etc.
Now if we look the aspect of the importance of animals and the loss the extinction has incurred upon us , bring us to the conclusion that saving a single species from extinction is worthy, however costly the process may occur. Lets look at the consequences we will have to face after the extinction of a few species. For example, if lions and tigers get extinct in the near future it will increase the number of herbivores and this can have a detrimental effect on plant diversity and ultimately on us as there will be reduced number of plants which also means reduced oxygen level and increased carbon dioxide level leading to more drastic global warming.
Few species also serve as the medium of spreading seeds or act as pollinators. In their absence, those plants will suffer and these will remain confined in one place and consequently perish due to an increase in competition for the same resources in the same area. This will have the adverse effect on environment altogether making us suffer lastly.
The devastated area is more likely, then, to be converted to some other land use, like intensive agriculture, which will become the consumer instead of the supplier.
