Question

Discuss whether operating systems are needed at all. Consider for example the situation where only one single fixed application program is executed on a hardware (like in an embedded system such as the software of an ABS anti-lock braking system running on the electronic control unit hardware of a car). Is an OS needed in this case or could the the single fixed application program run on the hardware without an operating systems? it nevertheless reasonable to have an operating system in-between an application program and the hardware? This is quite a philosophical question - therefore any answer is correct as long as you justify it reasonably.

Explanation / Answer

Before answering your question, I would like to discuss about Operating systems and why do we even need them?

What is an Operating System?

An OS is basically an interface between the user and the computer which acts as a translator. It basically transalates user's queries into binary data that the computer can understand. Then, it gets the processed data back from the computer, translates into human-understandable form and displays it back to the user.

Do we always need Operating Systems?

Why do we need Operating Systems then?

An OS has tons of advantages, som of whcih are mentioned beow.

Hence, the need of Operating System totally depends on the kind of applications you are running. For complex applications, it is always adviced to use an OS, but for a stand-alone simple application, you can go ahead without an OS.
