Question
Two plates are held fixed while the third plate is being pulled through the liquid at a constant velocity. The moving plate has an area of 2.40 m2. What is magnitude of the viscous retarding force opposing its motion? (The viscosities of the two fluids are indicated on the diagram).
10. Two plates are held fixed while the third plate is being pulled through the liquid at a constant velocity. The moving plate has an area of 2.40 m2. What is magnitude of the viscous retarding force opposing its motion? (The viscosities of the two fluids are indicated on the diagram). Fixed plate 6 mm u = 0.02 N • s/m2 4 m/s 1 3 mm u = 0.01 N • s/m2 Fixed plateExplanation / Answer
first we find the viscous force b/w upper plate and middle plate
so the viscous force F1=µA dv/dx
=0.02*2.4*4/6*10^-3
=32 N
now we find the viscous force b/w lower plate aand middle plate
so the viscous force F2=µA dv/dx
=0.01*2.4*4/3*10^-3
=32
the magnitude of the viscous force opposeing its motion F=F1+F2=32+32=64 N
