Question
My friend’s apartment in DC has a window that opens 25 meters (65 feet) above a lemonade stand. My friend lowers a long plastic tube out the window until its end enters the tank of delicious lemonade far below. She then begins to suck on the other end of the tube in hopes of getting a free drink. To her dismay, she never tastes a drop. Please explain why it would be impossible to drink from 25 meters, but it would be possible to drink from less than 10 meters. If the liquid is replaced with a different one in the tank, what would the new liquid density have to be so she can drink it with her straw from the window?
Explanation / Answer
For the friend to drink the lemonade, the pressure difference between the two ends must be able to support the weight of the 25 m lemonade. the actual pressure difference between the ends is 1 atm which is insufficient to support 25 m of lemonade. hence friend can not drink lemonade
