Question

Consider the following figure. Note: The currents are not necessarily in the direction shown. (Assume R1 = 17.0 , R2 = 3.0 , and V = 33 V.)

(a) Find the current in each resistor of the figure above by using the rules for resistors in series and parallel.

(b) Write three independent equations for the three currents using Kirchoff's laws: one with the node rule; a second using the loop rule through the battery, the 3.0- resistor, and the 24.0- resistor; and the third using the loop rule through the 17.0- and 24.0- resistors. Solve to check the answers found in part (a). (Do this on paper. Your instructor may ask you to turn in this work.)

3.0      A 17.0      A 24      A

Explanation / Answer

Effective resistance is R = R2 + R1 // 24 ohms

R = 3+ (17*24/(17+24))

R = 12.95 Ohms

Current is V/R = 33/12.95 = 2.548 A

Current through 3 Ohms is 2.548 A

Current through 17 Ohms is 2.548*17/41 = 1.056 A

Current through 24 Ohms is 2.548*24/71 = 1.49 A

b)

I6=I12+I24

V-I6R2-I12R1-I2424 =0

I1R2-I24*24 =0
