Question

""In the picture below, the two wires carry current i1 and i2, respectively, with positive current to the right. The charge q is positive and has velocity v to the right."

1- If i2 = 0 and i1 is greater than zero, then the magnetic field near charge q points out of the page

2- If i2 = 0 and i1 is greater than zero, then the force on q is north.

3-If i1 = - i2, then the wires repel each other.

4-If i2 = 0 and i1 is greater than zero, then the force on q points into the page.

5-If v = 0, then the force on q is zero.

6-If i1 is less than i2, then the force on q is south..

7-If i2 = - i1 then the force on q equals zero.

I'm using flemmings left hand and right hand rules to try and solve these but ive gotten it wrong 8 times... I think perhaps I'm confused in the idea of where to point my thumb for force in the different scenarios. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Explanation / Answer

1) false (right hand rule ;- B is inside the plan)

2) True ( flemmings left hand)

3) True (wires repel each oyher when the current is in different direction)

4) false (in north)

5) true (f = qvB)

6) true (flemming left hand)

7) flase ( B does not equal to zero at point q)
