Question

"While biopsychology and neurophysiological factors may play some role in the formation of criminal behavior -- specifically by affecting brain development -- it is far more likely that violent and non-violent antisocial behavior develops as a result of a series of complicated interactions with significant others in the social environment."

In a 2-3 page essay explain what the authors mean by this statement, especially the phrase "more likely that violent and non-violent antisocial behavior develops as a result of a series of complicated interactions with significant others in the social environment." If this is the case, what are the implications for the prevention of violent and non-violent antisocial behavior?  In your essay provide depth, clarity, precision, logic, and significance in your response. Offer examples whenever possible

Explanation / Answer

The auhtor is basically explicating the roles of interacitons between genetic and enviornmental factors in the development of antisocial behavior. The genetic predisposition for antisocial behavior may become even more harmful with presence of adverse environmental factor. More particullarly the social risk factors in terms of signficant others may include lack parental monioring and descipline, parental criminal records, role modeling of antisocial behavior on the parts of a close relative or friends, the peer group characterstics encouraging antisocial acts.

By the phrase "more likely that violent and non-violent antisocial behavior develops as a result of a series of complicated interactions with significant others in the social environment." the author means that though an individual may inherit propensities to engage in criminal behaviors that unfold (express) through development of brain in a particular fashion. But the actual form (manifestation) that criminal bhaviors may take would be dependent upon a complex interaction among various biological and environmental factors.

The means by this that biological and enviormental factors may play more or less significant role duirng different stages of development for example - early childhood, adolscence, adulthood. It is possible that genetic (biological factors) will have greater say in determining behavior duirng adulthood whereas during childhood the envrionmental factors would play more significant role. Also antiocial behavior take violent or non-violent forms. The voilent fomrs of antisocial behaviors are particularly the result of heavy influence of biological propensities. Whereas non-voilent crimes like breaking norms at home or school may be more likely result of largely the environmental factors.

The implicaiton of these case would be that violent and non-violent antisocial behaviors may require different kinds of intervention and treatment. For example antisocial behavior involving non-violent forms of behavior would suggest use of behvior modification techniques for changing such behavior. however more violent kinds of antisocial behavior may not respond to psychosocial interventions thus suggest other forms treatment/control strategies.
