On a horizontal frictionless surface, a puck of mass m1 moves in the x-direction with velocity and another puck of mass m2 moves in the negative y-direction with velocity . The pucks are on a collision course. (Vectors in this problem will be expressed using , notation!)

So i know this problem is really vague because it is not completed yet, but i am asking for a little extra help. i am trying to find out what possible questions could be asked based on this scenario. so if anyone has seen a problem involving these compenents and has equations that deal with the questions that would be very helpful!!

Explanation / Answer

It is a momentum conservation-collision problem

After the collision, speed and direction of the masses may be asked.

To solve such question, one should write momentum conservation equation in both direction

Initial momentum of the system(including both body) in x direction = final momentum of the system in x direction

initial momentum of the system in y direction = final momentum in y direction

Here initial momentum of system in x direction = m1v1 because inititally second mass is not in x direction

initial momentum in y direction = -m2v2 because only second mass was in y direction.

Another equation is coefficient of restitution =

=velocity of separation/ velocity of approach

now you can proceed to finad the final velocity of the masses
