Question

Twenty (20) moles of an ideal gas (take -15) are carried through the Diesel engine cycle shown below. The cycle consists of processes A, B, C, and D between states 1, 2,3, and 4. Assume that the processes are all reversible, and that processes A and C represent adiabatic processes. Process B and D represent isochoric processes (a) Fill out the table below and show all your work clearly (on a separate sheet) (b) Calculate the thermal efficiency of the cycle, 4 State P (Pa) V (m) T (K) 3.99 x10 600 0.25 15x 10 ,48 433.01 k 49.524

Explanation / Answer

Efficiency of diesel engine = (Q1 + Q2)/Q2

where, Q1 = n Cv * (Tf - Ti)

             Q2 = n Cv * (Tf - Ti)

=> Q1 = 2 * 8.314 *(649.52 - 433.01) * 20

            =   72002.56 J

Here, Tf = 1102.27 K

=> Q2 = 2 * 8.314 *(1102.27 - 600) * 20

            =   167034.8    J

=>   efficiency = ( - 72002.56 + 167034.8 )/167034.8

                        =   57 %
